Greece is an emerging surf destination where warm Mediterranean water meets uncrowded breaks. Crete's north coast picks up Aegean wind swells that produce fun, punchy waves, while the Peloponnese peninsula and the west coast of mainland Greece receive more consistent Atlantic-origin swells funneled through the Strait of Gibraltar. The islands of Naxos and Paros offer wind-driven waves popular with both surfers and windsurfers. Water stays between 17C and 26C, and the lineups are nearly always empty. Surfing in Greece means sessions framed by whitewashed villages, ancient ruins, and some of the best food in the Mediterranean. It is not a big wave destination, but for surfers seeking warm water, culture, and solitude, Greece delivers.
