Surfing in Fiji

Fiji is home to some of the most perfect and photogenic waves on earth. Cloudbreak, breaking off Tavarua Island, is consistently ranked among the top ten waves in the world, a powerful left-hander that barrels across a shallow coral reef in crystal-clear tropical water. Nearby Restaurants offers a more accessible but equally beautiful wave. The Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups hold dozens of quality reef breaks, many accessible only by boat. The best season runs from April through October when consistent south and southwest swells arrive from Southern Ocean storms. Water temperatures stay around 25-28C. Fiji combines world-class surf with genuine South Pacific warmth, traditional Fijian village culture, and a pace of life that melts away the stress of the modern world.

Frequently asked on Wavesafari

Fiji is home to Cloudbreak — one of the most revered left-hand reef waves on earth. Located off the Mamanuca Islands near Tavarua Island, Cloudbreak breaks over a shallow coral reef and generates long, barrel sections on significant Southern Ocean swells that can reach well overhead to double overhead and beyond. The wave hosts the annual WSL Championship Tour event and has been ridden by the world's best surfers on its biggest days. Restaurants, Frigate Passage, Swimming Pools, and dozens of other breaks in the Mamanuca and Yasawa chains extend Fiji's surf menu significantly.
The optimal surf season runs from May through October during Fiji's dry season. Southern Ocean swells are most consistent and powerful between June and September, when Cloudbreak fires most frequently. The combination of reliable swell, offshore trade winds, and dry sunny weather makes this period ideal. Cyclone season (November–April) can deliver exceptional surf but brings unpredictable weather and significant storm risk. Water temperatures are warm year-round (27–29°C) — boardshorts and a rashguard are all you need.
While Cloudbreak and the region's most powerful breaks are best suited to experienced surfers comfortable on powerful, shallow reef waves, Fiji has accessible options for intermediate surfers. Swimming Pools adjacent to Cloudbreak is a softer, more forgiving wave during smaller swells. Several surf resorts in the Mamanuca Islands cater to intermediate guests with guided access to appropriate breaks. The key is choosing your resort or liveaboard carefully — facilities vary considerably in their ability to serve different skill levels.
