The Juan Fernandez Archipelago, commonly known as the Robinson Crusoe Islands, sits 670 kilometers off Chile's coast in the South Pacific. These volcanic islands intercept massive Pacific swells that produce powerful reef breaks and point breaks along rugged, uninhabited coastline. The main island, Robinson Crusoe (Isla Mas a Tierra), has a small settlement and catches both north and south Pacific swells. Water temperatures range from 14C in winter to 20C in summer. The islands are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with extraordinary endemic wildlife, and the literary connection to Daniel Defoe's famous castaway adds romance to what is genuinely one of the world's most remote surf adventures.
