Surfing in Nicaragua

Nicaragua has rapidly become one of Central America's most popular surf destinations, and its secret weapon is the consistent offshore wind that grooms waves along the Pacific coast almost daily. Nicaragua offers some of Central America's most consistent and uncrowded surf. The Pacific coast receives powerful South and Central Pacific swells that fire point breaks and beach breaks up and down the coast. Popoyo is the country's most renowned wave — a powerful right-hand point break with multiple sections. San Juan del Sur, Playa Maderas, and the remote breaks of the Emerald Coast north of Popoyo complete an impressive surf menu. The Pacific coast of Nicaragua is best from April through October, peaking in May through August when strong South Pacific swells arrive consistently. Nicaragua has several excellent beginner zones, particularly around San Juan del Sur where beach breaks like Playa Maderas provide gentle, learnable conditions. The town has multiple surf schools with experienced instructors and board rental facilities. More advanced spots like Popoyo are better suited to experienced surfers due to their power and reef character. Nicaragua's relaxed pace, stunning scenery, and affordability make it a compelling destination for surfers at every stage of their development.
