Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline holds genuine surf potential that few travelers have explored. The coast around Malindi and Watamu picks up southeast swells that produce rideable reef breaks and beach breaks, particularly from June through September during the Kaskazi monsoon season. Further south toward Diani Beach, the coral reef creates sheltered conditions with occasional surf on bigger swells. Water temperatures are warm year-round, between 25C and 29C. Surfing in Kenya is still very much a frontier experience, with minimal crowds and the opportunity to combine wave riding with safari adventures, ancient Swahili culture in Lamu, and the vibrant energy of Nairobi. It is a destination for the explorer surfer who values experience over perfection.
