Surfing in Mexico

Mexico is one of the world's great surf destinations, with thousands of kilometers of Pacific coastline delivering waves for every level. The Baja Peninsula offers desert point breaks and consistent beach breaks within easy reach of California. Mainland Mexico's coast is packed with world-class spots: Puerto Escondido is home to the Mexican Pipeline, one of the heaviest beach breaks on earth, while Sayulita and Punta de Mita offer mellow, beginner-friendly waves in a tropical setting. The Pacific — particularly Oaxaca, Michoacán, and Baja California — offers some of the most powerful and consistent surf in the Americas. Mexico's Pacific coast peaks from April through October when South Pacific groundswells deliver consistent powerful surf to the Oaxacan and Michoacán coasts. Puerto Escondido's famous shorebreak is most active during this window. Baja California has a split season — South Pacific swells from spring through autumn and Northwest Pacific swells in winter. The Yucatán's Caribbean coast receives its best surf from October through March with North Atlantic and Caribbean swells.
Puerto Escondido's main break at Playa Zicatela is one of the most dangerous and powerful waves in the world — it is emphatically not suitable for beginner or intermediate surfers. However, the Puerto Escondido area has several other spots that are perfectly accessible. Playa Principal (the main town beach) and the La Punta break at the southern end of town offer gentle, longboard-friendly waves for beginners and intermediates. More advanced but approachable breaks can also be found nearby. Many visitors come specifically to watch Zicatela while surfing La Punta — an entirely legitimate and enjoyable strategy.
