Surfing in São Tomé

Sao Tome and Principe are two volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea, sitting almost exactly on the equator. The islands catch south and southwest Atlantic swells that produce reef breaks and beach breaks along their volcanic coastlines. The best surf arrives from May through September. Water temperatures are warm at 25-29C year-round. These tiny Portuguese-speaking islands are spectacularly beautiful, with volcanic peaks rising from cocoa plantations and primary rainforest. Principe is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The relaxed island pace, colonial-era plantation houses (rocas), chocolate production, and Afro-Portuguese Creole culture make this one of the most exotic and least-known surf destinations on earth.

Frequently asked on Wavesafari

Surfing in São Tomé centers around key zones like Porto Alegre, Praia Grande, and Santana on this equatorial twin-island nation. These locations offer distinct profiles ranging from raw coastal exposures to protected shelves, ensuring a unique map for shortboarders and longboarders alike.
The primary surf window peaks during June to September when consistent South Atlantic groundswells travel straight up past the equator. This period delivers the most reliable groundswell angles and optimal local wind transitions to clean up the breaks, as tracked across the WaveSafari dashboard.
Surfers in São Tomé need to be highly aware of specific regional factors: Porto Alegre holds a beautiful, empty right-hand point break that sweeps past a lush tropical fishing village over black rocks. Lineups thrive on mutual respect, so observing the peak and priority rules before paddling out is vital for a sustainable surf trip.
