Surfing in Mozambique

Mozambique's 2,500-kilometer Indian Ocean coastline is one of Africa's great surf frontiers. Tofo and Praia do Tofo in the south have become the main surf hub, with long point breaks and beach breaks catching consistent southeast swells. The coast around Inhambane province offers multiple quality setups, and further north the coastline remains almost completely unexplored by surfers. The best season runs from April through September when powerful groundswells arrive from the Southern Ocean. Water temperatures are warm, between 24C and 28C, and the marine life is extraordinary, with whale sharks, manta rays, and dolphins regularly seen from the lineup. Mozambique offers raw, authentic surf adventure in a country of stunning natural beauty.

Frequently asked on Wavesafari

Mozambique is one of Africa's most underexplored surf destinations. Its Indian Ocean coastline stretches over 2,700 kilometres and receives consistent Southern Ocean swells during the austral winter months. The country's surf is characterised by warm tropical water, powerful beach breaks, and a handful of quality reef setups, all in an extraordinarily remote and pristine natural setting. The Tofo area near Inhambane is the most developed surf zone, combining quality waves with world-class snorkelling and diving.
The best surf season runs from May to September, when Southern Ocean groundswells send clean energy up the coast. Water temperatures remain warm throughout the year, typically between 24°C and 28°C, making wetsuits unnecessary. The dry season aligns with the peak surf period, which means good visibility, manageable winds, and excellent overall conditions for a surf trip. The cyclone season from November to April can occasionally generate exceptional surf but also brings dangerous weather.
Mozambique is considerably more remote than surf destinations like Morocco or South Africa. While areas like Tofo and Ponta do Ouro have developed guesthouses and a basic surf infrastructure, many of the country's best breaks require a 4WD vehicle, advance planning, and self-sufficiency. Roads can be challenging, particularly outside the main tourist corridors. The rewards, however, are extraordinary — pristine uncrowded breaks in a setting of wild African coastal beauty.
