Guatemala's Pacific coast is one of Central America's best-kept surf secrets. Black-sand beach breaks stretch along the southern shoreline, picking up consistent south and southwest swells from May through October. The breaks around Sipacate and El Paredon have developed a growing surf scene, with small camps and schools catering to travelers looking for warm, uncrowded waves away from the more established Costa Rica and Nicaragua circuits. Water temperatures hover around 27-30C, the waves are generally mellow and beginner-friendly, and the cultural richness of Guatemala, from Mayan ruins in the highlands to colonial Antigua, adds depth to any surf trip.
