Tanzania is primarily known for Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, but its Indian Ocean coastline and the islands of Zanzibar hold surf potential for adventurous riders. The east coast of Zanzibar picks up long-period Indian Ocean swells that break over coral reefs, producing quality right-handers and lefts at spots like Paje, Jambiani, and Matemwe. The mainland coast around Dar es Salaam also catches swell during the southeast monsoon from June through October. Water temperatures are warm year-round, between 25C and 29C. Surfing in Tanzania is about the complete experience: riding waves in the morning, exploring Stone Town's ancient alleyways, and knowing that the Serengeti is just a short flight away.
