Surfing in Portugal

Portugal is Europe's undisputed surf capital and one of the world's most consistent destinations. The country's Atlantic-facing coastline captures powerful swells year-round, delivering everything from the giant waves of Nazare, which regularly exceed 20 meters, to the perfect hollow tubes of Supertubos in Peniche. Portugal's west-facing Atlantic coastline receives North Atlantic groundswells with remarkable consistency throughout the autumn and winter months, and the country's varied coastline produces an extraordinary diversity of breaks — from the gentle beach breaks of Ericeira's beginners' beaches to the monster waves of Nazaré, where the world record for the largest wave ever surfed was set. The country has something for every level of surfer, from beginners picking up their first board in Cascais to big wave specialists chasing winter giants. The affordability, year-round mild climate, exceptional food, and strong local surf culture make Portugal Europe's premier surf destination.
Portugal receives surf year-round, but the peak season for experienced surfers is October through March when North Atlantic swells are most powerful and consistent. September and October offer excellent surf with fewer crowds than winter. Summer (June–August) sees smaller, more manageable surf ideal for beginners, particularly around the beaches of Estoril, Cascais, and the Silver Coast. Nazaré's famous giant waves are almost exclusively a winter phenomenon, peaking between November and February.
The options are extraordinary. Ericeira, north of Lisbon, is a designated World Surfing Reserve — the second in the world — and is Portugal's most surf-centric town, with excellent waves for all levels within walking distance of town. Peniche, two hours north of Lisbon, is home to Supertubos, one of Europe's best beach break waves. The Algarve offers warmer, calmer options for beginners and families.
