Surfing in Thailand

Thailand's Andaman Sea coast comes alive for surfers during the southwest monsoon season from May through October, when consistent swells push into the beaches of Phuket, Khao Lak, and Krabi. Kata Beach and Kalim on Phuket are the most established spots, with beach breaks that range from beginner-friendly to punchy on bigger swells. Khao Lak further north offers longer stretches of beach with fewer crowds. The Gulf coast picks up occasional swells from tropical storms. Water temperatures are bath-warm, around 28-30C, and Thailand's legendary food, affordable accommodation, and welcoming culture make it an ideal destination for surfers who want to combine wave riding with an incredible travel experience.

Frequently asked on Wavesafari

Yes, Thailand has a growing and enthusiastic surf scene, though its waves are generally considered more suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers rather than seasoned globe-trotters chasing world-class breaks. The Andaman Sea coast (Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi) receives swell during the southwest monsoon from May to October. The Gulf of Thailand coast (Koh Samui, Hua Hin) is best from October to December when northeast monsoon swells arrive. Neither side rivals Indonesia or Sri Lanka for wave quality, but Thailand compensates with its extraordinary overall travel experience.
The two coasts have opposite seasons. The Andaman Sea coast is best between May and October, peaking in July and August during the southwest monsoon. The Gulf of Thailand side sees its most consistent surf from October through December. For most surf tourists visiting Thailand, the Andaman coast — particularly the breaks around Phuket and Kata Beach — is the primary destination, offering the most reliable swell window and the best-developed surf infrastructure.
Thailand is an excellent place to learn to surf. The warm water, gentle beach breaks around Phuket and Kata Beach, abundant surf schools with experienced instructors, and the country's world-class tourist infrastructure make it ideal for beginners. Combine surf lessons with Thailand's legendary food, culture, and hospitality, and it becomes one of the most enjoyable surf travel introductions available. More experienced surfers will find the waves modest compared to neighbouring countries but enjoyable for cross-training and relaxed sessions.
