Surfing in Syria

Syria's 180-kilometer Mediterranean coastline between Latakia and Tartus catches winter northwest swells that have the potential to produce rideable beach breaks and reef setups along a coast backed by the Alawite Mountains. The surf is essentially undocumented, but the fetch and swell patterns suggest consistent wave action during the storm season from October through March. Water temperatures range from 16C in winter to 28C in summer. Syria's extraordinary ancient heritage, including the crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers and the old city of Damascus, represents some of the most significant historical sites in the world. Access remains severely limited by the ongoing situation.

Frequently asked on Wavesafari

Surfing in Syria centers around key zones like Lattakia and Tartus on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. These locations offer distinct profiles ranging from raw coastal exposures to protected shelves, ensuring a unique map for shortboarders and longboarders alike.
The primary surf window peaks during Winter storm cycles when westerly winds push waves across the length of the Mediterranean basin. This period delivers the most reliable groundswell angles and optimal local wind transitions to clean up the breaks, as tracked across the WaveSafari dashboard.
Surfers in Syria need to be highly aware of specific regional factors: Surf is highly occasional, consisting of short-period wind peaks breaking over sandbars or harbor breakwaters. Lineups thrive on mutual respect, so observing the peak and priority rules before paddling out is vital for a sustainable surf trip.
