Algeria's 1,200-kilometer Mediterranean coastline is one of North Africa's last true frontier surf destinations. The stretch between Oran and Mostaganem picks up northwest swells that funnel through the Strait of Gibraltar, producing punchy beach breaks and occasional reef setups along rocky headlands. Further east, the coast around Jijel and Bejaia offers dramatic cliff-backed beaches with consistent wind swell. Water temperatures range from 15C in winter to 25C in summer, and the surf scene is still in its infancy, meaning empty lineups are the norm. Algeria's rich Berber and Arab culture, Mediterranean cuisine, and dramatic Saharan landscapes inland make it a genuinely adventurous alternative to its more developed neighbors.
